Dutasteride (Generic Avodart)

$20.00

Dutasteride is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, causing urinary problems.

Dutasteride works by inhibiting the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is implicated in the enlargement of the prostate gland.

Dutasteride helps shrink the prostate gland by reducing the levels of DHT, relieving symptoms such as difficulty urinating, a weak urine stream, and the need to urinate frequently.

Dutasteride may also be prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), as DHT is also associated with hair loss.

Studies suggest dutasteride might be more effective than finasteride in tackling male pattern baldness. While it may offer a stronger edge in hair loss treatment, the good news is that dutasteride appears to have a similar side effect profile to finasteride, meaning you’re less likely to experience more side effects in exchange for potentially better results.

  • Potential greater efficacy compared to finasteride.
  • Long-term maintenance of benefits.
  • Convenient once-daily oral administration.

General Information

Dutasteride is FDA-approved solely for treating BPH, commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. While it’s not FDA-approved for treating hair loss, it can be prescribed off-label for this purpose. Despite some studies demonstrating its effectiveness in treating hair loss, Dutasteride hasn’t undergone the FDA’s approval process specifically for this indication.

Important Information and Side Effects

The side effects of Dutasteride can include:

  • Sexual Side Effects: This is the most commonly reported side effect, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculate volume.
  • Breast Changes: Some individuals may experience breast tenderness, enlargement (gynecomastia), or nipple discharge.
  • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, Dutasteride can cause allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing.
  • Other Side Effects: Other less common side effects may include testicular pain, difficulty with ejaculation, dizziness, weakness, headache, and skin rash.
  • Pregnancy Risk: Dutasteride is not recommended for use in women, especially pregnant women, as it can cause harm to a developing male fetus. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling Dutasteride tablets.
